Redwood limited purchase in June, furniture factory limited stock or no rice pot

Recently, the 16th Conference of the States Parties to the Washington Convention (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) announced a revised list of new amendments. Five species of wood such as Dalbergia chinensis and D. chinensis were upgraded from “Appendix III” to “ Appendix II" requires a license to conduct international trade. This new regulation will take effect on June 12.

According to the newly revised list of amendments to the Washington Convention, S. chinensis, Central American Dalbergia, Dwarf Dalbergia, Belize Dalbergia and L. serrata are listed in Appendix II. In Dongguan furniture industry, the above five types of precious wood species are commonly known as Siamese rosewood (or Laos rosewood), Central American red rosewood, South American red rosewood, Central American black rosewood and large leaf rosewood (or black rosewood ). According to relevant regulations, the above-mentioned wood species must be traded internationally by virtue of import and export licenses or re-export certificates.

"In addition to red and black rosewood, the other tree species on the list are relatively rare in the market. The international purchase restriction will not have much impact on the furniture factory in the short term." Lin Qi, general manager of Dongguan Hongyun Furniture Co., Ltd. It is believed that at present, Siamese rosewood, black rosewood, rosewood and chicken wing wood are the mainstream materials of the major mahogany furniture factories in Guangdong, and the stocks on the market are large, and there will be no major problems within 3 to 5 years. The five types of wood species were upgraded to “Appendix II”. The major impacts were mainly the import of two types of wood species, red rosewood and black rosewood. “It is not excluded that some manufacturers will take the opportunity to raise the prices of raw materials and finished products.”

The relevant person in charge of the Dongguan Furniture Association said that for the new restrictions on purchases, mahogany furniture manufacturers can look for alternative wood species such as A. sinensis, F. chinensis, etc. that are not on the control list. The precious wood species listed in the national standard of mahogany have 33 genera, 5 genera and 8 species. Large manufacturers will have a lot of raw material inventory, which is enough to consume for a period of time. Therefore, it is expected that the retail price of finished products will not increase significantly in the short term. However, for some furniture factories that mainly use red and black rosewood species and have limited stocks, they may face the dilemma of no rice.

The spirit of the Washington Convention (C ITES) is to regulate, rather than completely ban, the international trade of wild species, using species grading and licensing to achieve sustainable use of the wild species market. The Convention regulates international trade species and can be classified into three appendices.
